On May 25th, 2020, a policeman murdered an unarmed African-American man in Minneapolis: George Floyd. This crime has unleashed a wave of protests in hundreds of U.S. cities—many of which have ended with looting, violence, even dead and wounded citizens.
The reason for these protests is police brutality, which seems to go unpunished in far too many cases: especially when the victim happens to be African-American. The United States has a serious problem in this regard. More than 1000 citizens die every year in clashes with police. And this country has the largest prison population in the world, even surpassing dictatorships like Vietnam or Turkmenistan.
Despite this harsh approach from law enforcement, the U.S. still has abnormally high crime rates when you consider that it is the world’s largest economy, so why is the U.S. so violent? How is it possible that, nearly 60 years after Martin Luther King’s speeches, this country maintains such levels of racism? And what exactly is “qualified immunity”? In this video, we’ll tell you.
