In addition to the coronavirus, the world is facing another pandemic, HIV. The first cases of the disease this virus causes, AIDS, were diagnosed in the United States in 1981. Since then, the disease has killed more than 30 million people and has wreaked havoc across the globe: especially in sub-Saharan Africa where, at the peak of the pandemic, life expectancy was cut by as much as 10 years.
Much has been said about the tremendous ravages of AIDS on our societies, but its most political aspect has barely been touched upon: the measures put in place by governments to curb this pandemic. We are talking about a disease for which there is still no vaccine and where public policies are fundamental. What have different governments done to contain AIDS? Which countries have been the most negligent in fighting the virus? And what is the current state of this pandemic? In this video we will answer all these questions.
