The West is bristling over an election held at the weekend in South Ossetia. The vote comes just a few days after a high level negotiation team from NATO visited Georgia to reaffirm ties with the nation and plan a way ahead in persuading Russia to allow Georgia to re-establish its sovereignty over the territory. A NATO statement released today said:
“NATO does not recognise the elections held on November 13 in the Georgian region of South Ossetia.
“The holding of such elections does not contribute to a peaceful and lasting settlement of the situation in Georgia. The Alliance reiterates its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.”
Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, Tuvalu and the Russian Federation all recognise South Ossetia as an independent state, though most governments do not.
