In 1952, U.S. President Harry S. Truman created a new intelligence agency so secret that for more than 20 years virtually no one knew about it. Even the members of the United States Congress themselves did not know exactly what it was, what it was doing, or how big it was.
A secret that in one way or another has been kept practically to this day.
However, in 2013 a leak to The Washington Post and The Guardian newspapers by a political consultant from the agency named Edward Snowden revealed the existence of several intelligence programmes within the NSA that were dedicated to collecting and invading the conversations and metadata of millions and millions of people, including such important leaders as German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.
But what exactly were these programmes… What role has the NSA played? How was it created? In this story, we enter one of the murkiest and lesser-known intelligence agencies in the world.
