Last November, the Moroccan army intervened in a demilitarized area of Western Sahara that, in theory, is under the control of the UN peace mission deployed in the area.
Of course, the reaction of the nationalist movement of the Sahrawis, the so-called Polisario Front, was not far behind. This organization announced that it was ending the ceasefire that had officially been in effect since 1991. From that moment on, things have been very tense.
Of course the big news came soon after: in December, US President Donald Trump announced that the US was recognizing Western Sahara as a territory of Morocco. Of course, this is not the only announcement that these two countries, Morocco and the United States, have made about their bilateral relations during 2020. The truth is that today their relations seem closer than ever, especially when it comes to military matters.
Now, where does Western Sahara stand? What does the United States seek in strengthening its ties with the Alaouite kingdom? And perhaps the most important question of all: How might US support for Rabat’s theses affect regional policy in North Africa and even a neighboring country like Spain? In this video we answer all these questions.
