It affords a wealth that has allowed its Royal House to enjoy one of the most extravagant lifestyles in the world: thousands of luxury cars, dozens of palaces scattered around the globe, airplanes, yachts…. The lavish lifestyle of the Sultan and his family is difficult to accept considering the relatively meager standard of living of the vast majority of Brunei’s population. And not only that. To consolidate his power, the Sultan, owner, and lord of the country, has not hesitated in establishing a rigid vision of Sharia law, despite the fact that his standard of living is far from the precepts that he imposes on his subjects. In this video, we bring you closer to one of the most little-known and strange countries in the world. Brunei, officially the Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace, is a country located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Apart from its coastline with the South China Sea, the country is completely surrounded by the insular Malaysian state of Sarawak.

It is separated into two parts by the Sarawak district of Limbang. Brunei is the only sovereign state completely on the island of Borneo; the remainder of the island’s territory is divided between the nations of Malaysia and Indonesia. Brunei’s population was 428,963 in 2018.

The government is an absolute monarchy under the Sultan, which implements a combination of English common law and sharia law, as well as direct general Islamic practices.
