The Boeing 737 MAX was created to replace the current 737 Next Generation models and compete against its European equivalent, the Airbus A320neo.
Both the 737 MAX and the A320neo are part of a new batch of more efficient, quieter and less polluting airplanes.
However, the US aircraft manufacturer Boeing may have made a terrible mistake in its business strategy, simply by not launching in time to be able to compete against Airbus. The European manufacturer’s A320neo model was put into service a year and a half before the North American model.
But just over a year after the 737 MAX entered service, on October 29th, 2018, Lion Air Flight 610 crashed shortly after taking off from Soekarno Hatta Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia. And even though it seemed strange for such a new plane to crash, on March 29th, 2019, another Boeing 737 MAX 8, operated by Ethiopian Airlines, also crashed shortly after taking off from Bole airport.
Since then this type of plane has been banned from flying. Boeing is doing everything it can to get the regulators to re-certify it but the list of problems just keeps growing and the damages for the North American manufacturer could already be in excess of $30 billion.
