Football: Chelsea Win Barclays Premier League 09/10 in Fine Style

Chelsea have today won the Barclays Premier League for 2009/2010 by a single point after demolishing Wigan Athletic at home, winning by a huge 8-0 scoreline.

Chelsea, with today’s impressive victory, showed real class to lift the trickiest league in World football.

Manchester United ensured they were pushed right to the line, however, as they maintained the pressure to the last recording their own impressive victory at home, in beating Stoke City 4-0. Man United fans made sure they used today’s game to stage a vociferous anti-Glazer protest before kick-off.

Didier Drogba, of Chelsea, will pick up the league’s Golden Boot award as he scored a hat-trick, while England fans will be a little concerned that Wayne Rooney, of Manchester United, was substituted on 77 minutes apparently holding his groin. The striker, so impressive this season, has looked a little out of sorts since his rushed return from injury in the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final against Bayern Munich.

There were to be no suprises at the foot of the table, as Portsmouth, Hull City and Burnley were all confirmed for relegation before today, however, all three sides put in spirited final day performances: Hull drew 0-0 at home to beleagured Liverpool, Portsmouth achieved the same result away to Everton, while Burnley will be going into the Championship on something of a high after recording a decent comeback against Champions League Qualifying Round bound Spurs. Burnley, 2-0 down at home after 35 minutes, came back to record a 4-2 home win.
