Football: Barclays Premier League Results Saturday 17 April 2010

The 3pm fixtures for the Barclays Premier League of today, Saturday 17th April 2010 have concluded, giving the following football scores:

• Birmingham 0 – 0 Hull City
• Blackburn 2 – 3 Everton
• Fulham 0 – 0 Wolves
• Man City 0 – 1 Man Utd
• Stoke City 1 – 2 Bolton
• Sunderland 2 -1 Burnley

Hull City crept 1 point closer to safety in their bore draw away at Birmingham – they now trail by just three points from the freefalling West Ham – they need a home win against either Villa or Sunderland in their next two games – and they must win away against Wigan if they are to go to the final game of the season away at Liverpool with any chance of safety to remain.

West Ham have their game in hand on Hull against Liverpool on Monday, and will hope that the Merseysiders do not have their Europa League Semi-Final match cancelled, as this would see them sure to rest some players.

Everton twice gave away a slender lead – and Blackburn looked to have secured another home point – before Tim Cahill grabbed the winner in the final moments of their match at Ewood Park, 3-2 the final scoreline after the Australian scored on 90 minutes to keep the Toffees on the brink of the Europa qualification spots. Everton are now just two points shy of their Liverpool rivals, who hold sixth place, though they have played one extra game, and two more than Villa who are one point above them in seventh.

Fulham may have their minds on their UEFA match this week, which might explain the lacklustre performance they put in against Wolves. Mick McCarthy’s men will be happy to add an extra point to the tally – which keeps them six points from trouble, with just four matches to play.

Another relegation candidate, Bolton, came from a goal down at Stoke to bag two quick goals in succession and claim a vital three points. The North Western side climb to 14th place, seven points from trouble as a result of a Matt Taylor brace of goals on 85 and 88 minutes, following a Kitson opener on 13 for the hosts. Stoke will be disappointed after controlling the match for large spells.

Sunderland struck early twice against Burnley, through Campbell (20) and Bent (40), in the first half before the visitors gave themselves some hope on 82 minutes by getting one back through Steven Thompson. They failed to capitalise, however, and remain on 27 points, four points adrift of West Ham in the final “safe” spot in the Premier League. Burnley, despite starting this campaign brightly, look like they may well be the next team confirmed relegated, unless they win at least two of their tricky final three games, where they host Liverpool, travel to Birmingham and then host Tottenham Hotspur, who will be looking for a Champions League place. They could realistically expect a maximum three points, under ordinary circumstances.

Manchester United scored a late, late goal to maintain their title charge in this afternoon’s early kick-off, while Chelsea will play Spurs in the later fixture, at 17:30pm, with the winner taking a leap towards a league title or a Champions League place respectively.

Many Premier League fans look towards West London this evening.
