On Tuesday 19th October the Swarovski Elements showcase housed the launch of Jawaher, the ultimate in luxury Arabian fashion. The new exhibition sees traditional Arabian dress and home accessories re-invented with a frosting of crystals.
The launch of Jawaher, which means jewel in Arabic, is timed to ride a trend of abaya and sheila customisation which has seen more sparkle introduced to the traditionally all-black garment.
The project features top couture designers from the gulf region including; UAE’s Sweet Lady, Kanzi, Alessandra Rich, Aristeo, Ziad Antoun, Aiisha Ramadan, Toujouri, Biyan, Eric Choong, Melinda Looi, Biyan and Dato Tom Abang Saufi and Rasha Khouri from Dia Boutique.
Sohad Acouri, a renowned designer from Lebanon, produced a silver belt made from divine rocks and cosmic silver stone crystals, fixed with beads. A plethora of abayas were on display with elaborations such as feathers, gold brocade and gathering.
Elizabeth Emmanuel, who designed princess Diana’s wedding dress, was in attendance for the launch party on Tuesday night. As did Diego Dolcini, the Italian luxury shoe designer, who was once Tom Ford”s right hand man at Gucci.
Rumours abounded that Jimmy Choo was in attendance, though organisers were unable to confirm owing to massed crowds outside and inside 24 Great Malborough Street. Malaysian dignitaries and royalty were out in force to support Tom Abang Saufi, who had masterminded an elaborate gold and blue neckpiece, pictured above.
Not on show last night was the six meter high Swarovski crystal curtain which is also part of the Jawaher collection. This impressive structure is instead housed against black quartz at the Cavalli Club in Dubai, created by renowned designer Roberto Cavalli. The giant centrepiece forms the focus of the club, which also features a wine bar, sushi bar and cigar lounge for visitors and residents in the Emirate.
The Jawaher exhibition will be open to the public from 20th October – 1st November 2010 at 24 Great Marlborough St, London, opposite Liberty.
