The Tarin Kot base in Southern Afghanistan now has a concrete cricket pitch thanks to sport-mad Aussie troops in the region.
The Australian Defence Force and the Afghan National Army had a small knock-up to inaugurate the new facility.
Army CAPT Pat Trainor, Force Support 3 garrison engineer, who helped to build the pitch in Tarin Kot said:
“I hope there will be some good test matches here and that one day there will be an international match between Afghanistan and Australia.”
Afghan National Army Brigadier General Zafar Khan, 4th Brigade commander, opened the pitch and told his soldiers to train hard for an upcoming match against the Australian troops.
The ANA are said to be hopeful of eventually repeating the success of the Afghan national cricket team, who won silver at the 2010 Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China.
