Eighteen months ago, Brazil was first hit by the Zika virus. Now, thousands of mothers are caring for babies with severe deformities. The Zika outbreak was linked to an alarming rise in babies born with microcephaly, a disease that affects the development of the skull and brain. Health authorities have promised to open specialised treatment centres for the infants. But in the meantime, parents are turning to each other for help.
Meanwhile, in the US, Donald Trump has fired FBI director James Comey. The White House is defending the shock move as a way to restore public trust. But Democrats claim it’s just more proof of a cover-up of Trump’s alleged ties to Russia.
The US is also being hit by a skyrocketing number of drug overdoses, up 200 percent since the year 2000. We report from West Virginia, the state with the highest number of drug-related deaths.
