    Tens of thousands of people from across China flocked to Changsha, in Hunan province to attend the funeral ceremony of Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice” on May 24, 2021. Yuan, who died on May 22 at the age of 90, developed the first varieties of hybrid rice in the 1970s. His breakthrough boosted grain harvests and helped feed the world’s most populous country.
