One in six young people have stopped working since the onset of COVID 19 according to latest figures from the International Labour organisation (ILO)
Before the crisis young people aged 15-24 were already two to three times more likely than adults to be un- or underemployed with more than 267 million young people not in employment. Social and economic upheaval and now this health crisis has only exacerbated the problem.
The international community will celebrate World Youth Skills Day 2020 “Skills for a Resilient Youth in the Era of COVID 19 and beyond”. This year’s focus will be on building resilience.
In Niger, young displaced youth have been given a fresh start and a chance to start their own businesses, though a training project funded by the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the governments of Norway and Niger. They’ve been given a clean start learning how to make liquid soap and washing powder, that they can easily make and sell.
