    Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended his deep condolences to Yuan Longping’s family following the passing of the renowned scientist. Yuan, China’s leading agronomist known for his successful development of the world’s first hybrid rice strain that pulled countless people out of hunger both in China and in other parts of the world, died of illness at age 91 on Saturday. A memorial service for Yuan is being held in central China’s Changsha City on Monday.
