Sky News Australia published this video item, entitled “Wyatt slams NT government’s housing in remote communities” – below is their description.
Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt has hit out at the Northern Territory government over the state of housing in remote communities.
Speaking at a gathering of aboriginal land councils in Darwin, Mr Wyatt threatened to take the provision of housing out of the Territory government’s hands if it doesn’t lift its game.
The NT Labor government promised to spend $1.1 billion on remote housing over 10 years, but in the four years since it was elected it has spent just $200 million – which is the equivalent of 110 new homes.
The federal government has also fallen short of its promised target of $550 million, with only $110 million being spent.
Overcrowding in remote Indigenous housing is getting worse, with 2,515 homes considered overcrowded in the NT.

Australia, officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia, is a sovereign country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. It is the largest country in Oceania and the world’s sixth-largest country by total area.
The term Indigenous Australians refers to Aboriginal Australians as well as Torres Strait Islanders, and the term should only be used when both groups are included in the topic being addressed, or by self-identification by a person as Indigenous.
Torres Strait Islanders are ethnically and culturally distinct, despite extensive cultural exchange with some of the Aboriginal groups, and the Torres Strait Islands are mostly part of Queensland but have a separate governmental status.
In the 2016 Australian Census, Indigenous Australians comprised 3.3% of Australia’s population, with 91% of these identifying as Aboriginal only, 5% Torres Strait Islander, and 4% both.
The Northern Territory (aka NT) is a vast federal territory in Australia famed for its Outback desert landscapes. In the arid Red Centre lie the iconic sandstone monolith Uluru (Ayers Rock), the red-rock domes of Kata Tjuta and the sculpted cliffs of Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park.
Alice Springs is the gateway town to the Red Centre desert.
The NT covers 1,349,129 square kilometres (520,902 sq mi). It is sparsely populated, with a population of only 245,353.
The economy is based largely on mining and petroleum, which during 2018–2019 contributed 23% of the gross state product, or $5.68 billion, accounting for 92.4% of exports.
The capital and largest city is Darwin. The population is concentrated in coastal regions and along the Stuart Highway.
