When the COVID-19 pandemic began, some people adopted pets in a way to avoid the isolation that came with social distancing for many, but now that people are returning to work and resuming travel, caring for pets is much more challenging than when many were adopted at the start of the pandemic.

That’s led to an alarming trend of furry companions being returned, and animal welfare groups are raising the alarm.
