Heads of state from nations on six continents gathered for a virtual Earth Day summit on April 22, 2021. During the online event organised by the administration of US President Joe Biden and involving 40 leaders, the US, China, the EU and Japan and many other countries pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions on a path to carbon neutrality. Some nations, however, were seen as not taking significant steps beyond their previous commitments to tackle the global problem.
