World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and other officials are expected to provide an update on Wednesday on COVID-19, monkeypox and other global health concerns.
More than 50 countries where monkeypox is not endemic have reported outbreaks of the viral disease as confirmed cases exceeded 5,820.
Monkeypox, which spreads through close contact and was first found in monkeys, mostly occurs in west and central Africa and only very occasionally spreads elsewhere.
The U.S. government has ordered an additional 2.5 million doses of Bavarian Nordic’s BAVA.CO vaccine for use against monkeypox outbreaks, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Friday.
