World Faces ‘Mega-Famines’ from Virus Impact on Fragile Countries: UN

  • The World Food Programme (WFP) cautioned Thursday the world faces a catastrophic scenario of multiple famines if enough funds weren’t pledged to combat the ripple effect of COVID-19 on the world’s most fragile countries, already grappling with food insecurity.

    “What we’re facing now is a double pandemic of truly.. famines that could impact us at biblical proportions”, David Beasley, the Executive Director of WFP, told a conference in Geneva.

    The United Nations has announced it is increasing its appeal to fight the coronavirus pandemic in fragile and vulnerable countries from 2 billion US dollars to 6.7 billion US dollars.

    Since the original appeal on March 25, the United Nations said 1 billion US dollars has been raised to support efforts across 37 fragile countries to tackle COVID-19.

    The updated appeal launched Thursday includes nine additional vulnerable countries: Benin, Djibouti, Liberia, Mozambique, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sierra Leone, Togo and Zimbabwe.

    UN agencies are attempting to create a coordinated, global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
