The French-owned company building Australia’s future submarine fleet has granted employees taxpayer-funded pay rises despite fears the project is already billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule.

Secret taxpayer-funded pay rises and bonuses have been handed to Naval Group Australia, despite fears the project is already billions of dollars over budget, and lagging years behind schedule.

The French company running the program won department approval for the payments, which have been criticised as “insensitive” during a looming recession.
