A pregnant woman’s death after she was denied a caesarean section in hospital in Senegal has provoked nationwide condemnation and protest.
Astou Sokhna died on April 7 in a public hospital in the northern town of Louga, after reportedly spending 20 hours in labour.
Four midwives have been arrested for her death, which the Ministry of Health says was an avoidable human error.
According to the UN, a woman dies every two minutes from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Most of these deaths take place in Africa.
