The International Criminal Court is opening an investigation into alleged war crimes in the Palestinian Territories.

The probe will examine accusations since 2014 against Israeli forces and Palestinian groups such as Hamas.

Palestinian leaders say it’s long overdue.

Israel and its close ally, the U.S., have both slammed the decision, although neither are members of the ICC.

So what can the investigation achieve?

The International Criminal Court is an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal that sits in The Hague, Netherlands. The ICC is the first and only permanent international court with jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.
