  • The Telegraph published this video item, entitled “Why Nicola Sturgeon’s back-and-forth Indyref2 messaging matters | Analysis” – below is their description.

After the election, Nicola Sturgeon told Boris Johnson her plan for a second independence referendum was “now a matter of when, not if”, despite the SNP falling short of a majority.

However, throughout the campaign for the May 6 election, there were varied messages from the SNP on what a vote for them meant.

Sometimes it meant independence, other times it meant backing Ms Sturgeon’s handling of the Covid pandemic recovery. So SNP voters may not have voted for the party to back independence, says Telegraph columnist Alan Cochrane.

“Although they played down an independence referendum…the ink on the results had barely dried before Nicola Sturgeon said there was a majority in Scotland for independence and an independence referendum,” says Alan Cochrane.

Watch the video to see how the SNP mixed their campaign messaging and why it’s a “big claim” by Nicola Sturgeon to say that the results give her a mandate for a second referendum.
