Many Canadians received a payment from the government last week – but it was not clear why.

Throughout the year, Canadians pay a carbon tax on carbon-heavy goods and services like gas. The tax is meant to discourage pollution and reward pro-environment behavior. The government promised Canadians the entire amount raised with the carbon tax would be refunded or rebated back.
