On the eve of its 10th anniversary, the Belt and Road Initiative has widened its ambit. With climate change and environmental deterioration fallouts worsening, it is now focusing on building a Green Belt and Road, promoting green infrastructure, transport and energy. In this edition of Global Thinkers Special, themed “A Green BRI and Green Shared Future,” Wang Guan talks with experts to assess the progress and the problems. China’s Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu talks about balancing climate ambitions with pragmatism, while Singapore’s Minister of Sustainability and Environment Grace Fu describes the city-state’s greening efforts. China’s policy to stop building new coal-fired projects abroad strikes a chord in the other guests, who say it prevented an annual temperature rise of 2.7 degrees Celsius and almost 600 million tonnes of carbon emissions. Another heartening thing about the Chinese policy is it is helping other developing countries reduce their carbon footprint, something the West has not done.
