WHO Says Countries Must Remove Financial Barriers to Coronavirus Health Care

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday pledged to help countries struggling with the financial burden of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, following the announcement that the number of confirmed cases passed 1 million. #Coronavirus #Covid19 #WHO

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said the impact of the outbreak has caused “a shared struggle to protect both lives and livelihoods.”

Tedros also hailed countries who have been offering free testing for the virus, as well as those who have been removing financial barriers to healthcare entirely to help deal with the pandemic.

In the joint news conference with the WHO, the Managing Director of the IMF Kristalina Georgieva announced that “we are now in a recession”, calling the economic impact of the virus “way worse than the global financial crisis”.

Georgieva also announced that the organization had a $1 trillion “war chest” to help protect economies who had been badly affected by the crisis, that it was “determined to use as much as necessary in protecting the economy.”

The new coronavirus has caused a global pandemic that has sickened at least 1,056,777, killed 55,781 worldwide, crippled economies and forced restrictions on the movement of millions of people in an effort to stop the virus from spreading further and overwhelming health care systems.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
