Boris Johnson is facing one of the biggest electoral challenges of his premiership on Thursday as two constituencies head to the polls for by-elections.

Wakefield and Tiverton and Honiton will both elect a new MP after the resignations of Neil Parish, who was caught watching pornography in the House of Commons chamber, and Imran Ahmad Khan, who has been jailed for sexually assaulting a teenage boy.

They comes as the Tories stare down dire ratings in the polls and Mr Johnson struggles to recover from months of stories about partygate. Earlier this month, 40 per cent of his MPs voted to remove him from office.

Mr Johnson has pledged to lead his party “to victory again”, but privately there are concerns that losing two seats on Thursday could sound a death knell for his leadership.
