Daily Mail published this video item, entitled “White House Press Sec Jen Psaki defends AUKUS submarine deal with Australia amid France anger” – below is their description.
White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, defends Australian submarine deal.
The new alliance – called AUKUS – will see the US and UK cooperate to build Australia’s first ever nuclear submarine fleet of at least eight vessels. The senior administration official defended the pact, saying the White House was focused on ‘strengthening longstanding historic ties, including with our NATO Allies and the EU, as well as working through new configurations, such as the Quad or AUKUS.’
Australia is now set to get its hands on eight nuclear-powered submarines which will likely cost less than the $7.5billion-per vessel that France was offering for conventional diesel-electric submarines. While the exact design and costs of Australia’s subs have yet to be revealed, US Virginia-class nuclear subs cost around $4.5bn each and UK Astute-class $2.6bn each.
