CGTN published this video item, entitled “What’s the role China’s playing in the U.S. presidential race?” – below is their description.
China has become one of the key foreign policy issues in the 2020 U.S. presidential race, heightened by President Trump’s tariff wars and the blame game on the COVID-19 pandemic. Days ago, in their party platform, Democrats took a strong stance against China’s trade policies and sought to portray Trump’s efforts against the country as not tough enough. With the election around the corner, could the old trick of playing the China card still work? More importantly, is it proper to do so? Tian Wei posed these questions to Susan Thornton, the former acting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. She is currently a senior fellow and research scholar at the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale University Law School. Through 30 years of experience with the U.S. State Department in Eurasia and East Asia, she was involved in policy-making on the DPRK, trade tensions between China and the U.S., and dealing with a fast-changing international environment. She shares her views on current China-U.S. ties.
