China has placed the last of the BeiDou Navigation System satellites in orbit. The system has been under development since 2000, and includes satellites in both geo-stationary and non-geostationary orbits. With more satellites than America’s GPS system, the BeiDou offers greater accuracy, and can now compete with Russia’s GLONASS and Europe’s Galileo systems. So what is BeiDou and its potential applications? How does it differ to existing global satellite systems? And what impact will it have on China’s economy and its ability to develop associated technologies?
