Chancellor Rishi Sunak has defended splurging the cash in his budget, insisting that the government is “still being responsible”.
Mr Sunak has pledged to spend £12bn on an immediate response to COVID-19 and £18bn in other spending commitments, in his first budget as chancellor.
In an interview with Sky News, he said the government was able to make the costly spending promises because “the foundations of our economy are strong”.
