WATCHING THE WATCHDOG

How does a family recover from a medical tragedy – a mum whose baby died, and who almost lost her own life?

If something goes wrong for any of us in the NZ health system we can complain to the Health and Disability Commissioner – an independent watchdog who will investigate.

But it can be a drawn out process for some families, who say their wait for answers – and accountability – has become agonisingly long and slow.

We ask the HDC about those stuck in the system for over 3 years, and what needs to change.
