The Chancellor of the Exchequer is poised to deliver a raft of new spending pledges in his Budget as he enjoys billions of pounds in extra cash to play with.

Better-than-expected figures for economic growth and public spending mean the Chancellor has been freed up to deliver more generous measures to ease the cost of living crunch on households.

A cut to the taper rate on Universal Credit has been tipped as a potential new measure that would soften the blow for the poorest households after the £20 uplift to the benefit was scrapped.
