(Apr. 20) (Apr. 20) Thousands of Indian migrant workers rush to catch a ride home, hours after New Delhi announced a week-long lockdown.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned the country to show restraint during the second wave of coronavirus infections “that has come like a storm.”
India has seen an explosive surge in number of Covid-19 cases over the last month, with a 7-day-average of more than 200,000 cases per day.
Many migrant workers were seen crowding bus stations in New Delhi to leave town on Tuesday.
However, Modi has asked people to stay where they are, and help in saving the country from another lockdown so the economy is not adversely affected.
He also re-announced the opening of vaccinations to people over the age of 18 after May 1 and said half of the vaccines produced in India will be given to Indian states and hospitals.
Total COVID-19 cases in India have gone past the 15 million mark, making the country the second worst affected by the pandemic after United States.
