7NEWS Australia published this video item, entitled “Warragamba Dam spills during New South Wales floods – March 2021 | 7NEWS” – below is their description.
A major spill event is happening at Warragamba Dam, with almost one Sydney Harbour’s worth of water released today as the dam spills over. By the end of this weather event, 1,500 gigalitres of water will flow into the already-brimming dam – that’s roughly 75% of the its capacity. Now the fear is just how fast all that water will spread across the floodplain basin which takes in vast terrain, including the Hawkesbury, Penrith and Blacktown. It’s been called the ‘bathtub effect’ by the SES; that is, the tap turns on and there’s nowhere for the water to go. Around 150,000 people live on the Western Sydney floodplain.
