Global News published this video item, entitled “Walter Gretzky funeral: An emotional Wayne Gretzky remembers his father” – below is their description.
“The Great One” Wayne Gretzky spoke Saturday during his father Walter’s funeral, who passed away at the age of 82 on Thursday. Wayne recounted a story of when he was younger and his mom, Phyllis, was on the verge of delivering his brother Brent. While Walter knew his wife Phyllis was close to going into labour, Wayne had an important hockey tournament that weekend. Phyllis ended up giving birth with Walter missing it. While one person remarked that he had missed the birth, Walter said after “yes, but we got the trophy” Wayne recounted.
Walter Gretzky passed away Thursday following complications from Parkinson’s disease. Tributes poured in throughout Friday after Wayne Gretzky confirmed the news with a social media post.
Following the news of his death, a small memorial sprung up for Walter Gretzky outside the arena that bears his son’s name in Brantford, Ont.
Two hockey sticks – one full-sized, one miniature – and a Canadian flag adorn the sign marking off Walter Gretzky’s parking spot outside the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre.
“Reserved for Walter Gretzky, Lord Mayor of Brantford,” the sign reads.
