Volunteers with the non-profit organization Shri Deodhan Sewa Samiti were collecting the unclaimed ashes of people who died from COVID-19 in India earlier this week to give the bodies a respectful sendoff per Hindu traditions as the country continues to see an unprecedented surge in COVID-19 deaths with nearly 4,000 being seen on Tuesday alone.

Elsewhere in southern India, hundreds of people gathered outside a hospital in hopes of securing remdesivir, a drug used for the treatment of COVID-19, many waving medical prescription documents behind barricades as police held crowds back.

As people try to get treatment, small town and city hospitals are being overwhelmed with one in Bijnor seeing loved ones trying to find help for their family members. One man whose mother was in intensive care tearfully spoke about asking staff to check on his mother “shivering in pain,” claiming that no one came to check even after asking three times. It’s one of many stories being heard consistently as the brutal second wave reached small towns and ripped through the country’s health system not equipped to deal with such a large health crisis.
