The #Beijing development plan, which was released in 2017, says that old hutongs and courtyard houses cannot be demolished to make way for high rises anymore. They can only be renovated to be fit for a modern living. The hutong area in the west of Caishikou, a residential district in the south of Beijing, started a pilot program called “voluntary resettlement.” Vacated courtyards have been transformed into talent apartments, offices and coffee bars, which have given a new lease of life to the old courtyards.
