Singapore and Malaysia both claim to be the place of origin for Hainanese chicken rice, the smooth-skinned, sweet, firm-fleshed dish served with broth-boiled rice. But, if Hainanese chicken rice didn’t originate from Hainan, why does it have that name? I arrived in Wenchang, the birthplace of Hainanese chicken rice, to try and track down the most authentic Wenchang chicken. But on my journey, I saw buildings in Baroque style and had the so-called British afternoon tea, and I couldn’t help wondering if I’m really on the island of Hainan.
