As China’s Communist Party marks the 100th year of its founding in July 2021, thousands of tourists have been flocking to Yanan, a western Chinese city that bills itself as a “Red Holy Land”. Large family and tour groups arranged by employers and schools have been visiting the city where Chairman Mao Zedong and his forces set up base in 1935, during a year-long retreat known as the Long March.
