With more than 2.5 million lives lost and over 120 million confirmed cases worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic rages on amid mass vaccination efforts. As wealthy countries snapped up COVID-19 vaccine supplies, at least 47 poor countries have not had even one jab. Since U.S. President Joe Biden took office, an outbreak containment plan has been his focus. Last Thursday, he signed the $1.9 trillion American rescue plan touted to deliver relief and recovery from the pandemic. Meanwhile, China has administered nearly 65 million vaccine doses as of Sunday. With the pandemic a key topic in the coming China-U.S. talks in Alaska, what are the chances of cooperation on vaccine distribution and pandemic prevention? CGTN’s Tian Wei talked to Ian Lipkin, an epidemiologist at Columbia University, who is also known as the “virus hunter.” He visited China last January to help contain the coronavirus. He contracted the virus last March but recovered later.
