Violent escape | Bodies in the street as gang boss flees Haiti prison

RT published this video item, entitled “Violent escape | Bodies in the street as gang boss flees Haiti prison” – below is their description.

At least seven prisoners and a prison director were killed in a dramatic shootout on Thursday after several inmates escaped from a prison in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Among the escapees was Arnel Joseph, one of Haiti’s most powerful gang leaders.

Joseph had been the most wanted gang boss in Haiti prior to his incarceration.

As the violence at Croix des Bouquets prison spilled out onto the streets, at least six bodies were observed near the prison by AFP photographers.

Haiti’s Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe confirmed that the authorities have since regained control over the prison, which was also the site of a mass breakout in 2014, during which hundreds of inmates escaped

Haiti is a Caribbean country that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to its east. Though it’s still recovering from a 2010 earthquake, many of Haiti’s landmarks dating to the early 19th century remain intact. These include Citadelle la Ferrière, a mountaintop fortress.

Jean-Jacques Dessalines (later Emperor Jacques I), defeated Napoleon Bonaparte’s forces and declared Haiti’s sovereignty on 1 January 1804.

Haiti became the only state in history established by a successful slave revolt. Apart from Alexandre Pétion, the first President of the Republic, all of Haiti’s first leaders were former slaves.
