In just seven days this month, Greater London saw seven violent deaths. An appalling snapshot of what is now happening to the crime rate, post lockdown. Homicide in the capital is up 23 percent in the year to April – or to put it in a wider context – knife crime is now fifty one percent higher than when records began just under a decade ago.

Stop and search has doubled in the last year too. It’s without doubt one of the most controversial responses to rising crime. All of this against a backdrop of renewed questions over racial justice and policing sparked by the death of George Floyd. In an exclusive film, Newsnight’s Richard Watson went on patrol with one of the Metropolitan Police’s newly formed violence suppression units.

Newsnight is the BBC’s flagship news and current affairs TV programme – with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.
