Pyrmont: Police are appealing for public assistance following an armed robbery on Harris Street at 10:30pm on Monday 11th January 2021. Police say a man armed with a knife entered a convenience store and threatened an employee before stealing cash and cigarettes. Police Statement: “Police are appealing for public assistance and have released CCTV following an armed robbery in inner city Sydney earlier this week. About 10.30pm on Monday 11 January 2021, an unknown male – armed with a knife – entered a convenience store on Harris Street, Pyrmont. The man threatened the employee, a 25-year-old man, before stealing cash and cigarettes. The employee was not injured. The man fled the store a short time later and was last seen riding a green bicycle with a white seat, along William Henry Street in Ultimo. Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command were contacted and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Detectives have now released CCTV of a man who they believe could assist with their inquiries. The man is depicted as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance and of solid build. At the time, he was wearing a dark blue hooded jumper, with a red shirt over the top, a dark blue cap with three white stripes on the peak, black pants, black shoes and a black face mask. He was carrying a black backpack.”

Torres Strait Islanders are the Indigenous peoples of the Torres Strait Islands, which are part of the state of Queensland, Australia. Ethnically distinct from the Aboriginal people of the rest of Australia, they are often grouped with them as Indigenous Australians. Today there are many more Torres Strait Islander people living in mainland Australia (nearly 28,000) than on the Islands (about 4,500).

There are five distinct peoples within broader designation of Torres Strait Islander people, based partly on geographical and cultural divisions. There are two main Indigenous language groups, Kalaw Lagaw Ya and Meriam Mir, and Torres Strait Creole is also widely spoken, as a language of trade and commerce. The core of Island culture is Papuo-Austronesian, and the people traditionally a seafaring nation. There is a strong artistic culture, particularly in sculpture, printmaking and mask-making.
