Verdict to be announced over 96 killed in 1989 Liverpool stadium disaster

Familes of victims killed in one of football’s worst stadium disasters will learn on Wednesday whether those responsible for the tragedy will be brought to justice.

Ninety-six fans of Liverpool Football Club were crushed to death after an access gate was opened at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield in 1989.

The original inquest verdict of “accidental death” was revised to “unlawful killing” last year, after new evidence of police mistakes and a subsequent cover-up were revealed.

Al Jazeera’s Paul Brennan reports.
