Drug companies say that removing patents for COVID-19 vaccines will not quicken the pace of inoculations as South Africa and India initiate a movement to waive intellectual property rules over the shots.
In talks the World Trade Organization helped kick off, rich countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom say that such a move would stifle scientific progress and put private investors off.
Developing countries are concerned that wealthy nations are far ahead of them in the vaccination game and have the lion’s share of jabs.
