The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District’s police chief, Pete Arredondo, was fired on Wednesday night by the board of trustees over the botched response by law enforcement to the shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead.
Parents and classmates of the victims, as well as local residents, spoke at the board meeting both before and after the firing was made, criticizing both police and the board itself for taking so long to dismiss Arredondo.
“I have messages for Pete Arredondo and all the law enforcement that were there that day: turn in your badge and step down. You don’t deserve to wear one,” student CaitlIn Gonzales said in front of the board.
Vincent Salazar, whose granddaughter Layla died in the shooting, said outside the board meeting that the fact it took so long to fire one person showed the “fight’s just begun.” He added that he didn’t have much to say to Arredondo, who did not attend the board meeting.
“There ain’t much to tell a coward. I think he has that yellow stripe on the back. It will stay with him for the rest of his life,” Salazar told reporters.
Arredondo is the first officer dismissed over what has been seen as a hesitant response to one of the worst mass school shootings in U.S. history.
