Global News published this video item, entitled “US won’t demand accountability after Israeli army says Shireen Abu Akleh was “likely killed” by IDF” – below is their description.
After an Israeli Armed Forces report concluded that there’s “high probability” Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by an IDF soldier, U.S. State Department principal deputy spokesperson “underscored the importance of accountability” but stopped short of demanding action to ensure accountability for Abu Akleh and her family.
During a long exchange with journalists, Vedant Patel was pressed to give an actionable plan on how the U.S. will demand action to ensure accountability, but he sticked to the State Department’s release on “welcoming Israel’s review of this tragic incident, and underscoring the importance of accountability in this case, such as policies and procedures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.”
Abu Akleh, an Al-Jazeera journalist, was shot dead on May 11 while covering an Israeli military operation in the volatile town of Jenin in the occupied West Bank.
IDF’s report said the soldier identified will not face an internal investigation or consequences.
