US vice president condemns Russia’s occupation of Georgian land
US Vice President Mike Pence has been in Georgia where he has condemned Russian occupation of one-fifth of the country and promised new sanctions against the Kremlin.
Pence visited US troops in the former Soviet republic as part of his regional tour aimed at reassuring NATO allies.
Pence’s visit was deemed a display of support for a country whose breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia are under Russian control.
